City Map

City Introduction

Atlanta is the capital of the state of Georgia, and as an urban area, Atlanta is one of the largest cities in the United States. The city’s history dates back to 1837, when it was founded as the terminus of one of the many railroads built in the U.S. states in the 19th century.

It was Georgia’s politicians who decided the construction of the Western and Atlantic Railroad, which got a railway station in the settlement of Terminus. Over the years Terminus became Atlanta. The beginning started slowly, and from 6 buildings and 30 inhabitants in 1842, about 6 million people live in Greater Atlanta today.

Atlanta is known for several things. Coca-Cola and CNN are two of the city’s companies, and this is also where one of the world’s largest airports is located. The city is in constant development and with many modern buildings that provide a characteristic, American metropolitan skyline.

From Atlanta, you can easily reach attractions in the surrounding area and neighboring states that include Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. If you want in nature, Providence Canyon State Park and Lake Lanier are good choices, while Athens, Macon and Nashville are some of the many exciting cities close by.

Top Attractions

Georgia State Capitol, Atlanta, Georgia, USA

Georgia State Capitol

Georgia State Capitol is the government building for the state of Georgia, of which Atlanta is the capital. It is here that the governor has offices and it is here that the Parliament of Georgia holds its sessions. The parliament consists of two chambers, the Georgia State Senate and the Georgia House of Representatives.

Atlanta’s first city hall was located on this site in the growing city of the 1800s. At the time, Milledgeville was the capital of Georgia, and the city government of Atlanta donated the area to the state in order to attract the government and a relocation of the capital. Their venture succeeded, and Atlanta was chosen as the state’s new and, by the way, fifth capital.

Like many other Capitol buildings in the United States, the Georgia State Capitol was built in neoclassicism with inspiration from the United States Government Building in Washington. Architects Willoughby J. Edbrooke and Franklin Pierce Burnham were responsible for the design of the building, which was completed in 1889. The Capitol was modernly equipped with elevators, central heating and electric lighting. Among the details of the decoration is the dome, which is gilded with Georgia gold, and you can notice the statue of Miss Freedom at the top.

The same year as the opening of the building itself, the Georgia Capitol Museum was established. It is a museum that has natural and cultural history collections from the state. They consist of stones, minerals and fossils and various effects from Georgia’s Native American population. Portraits of governors, statues of celebrities from Georgia’s development, and historic flags can be seen in the Capitol.

Swan House

Swan House is a beautiful mansion that was built 1925-1928 as a residence for the wealthy Edward and Emily Inman. The house is called the Swan House because of the swans that recur in several places in the decoration. Today, the mansion is open as a museum, where you get a fine impression of the 1920s-1930s interior design of Atlanta’s upper class.

It was the architect Philip T. Shutze who designed the Swan House, who used different styles in the design, mainly kept in Neo-Renaissance with elements of Italian Classicism and English-Palladian style. The western facade with the cascade system facing the garden is a beautiful example from Renaissance Italy.

Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park contains the Ebenezer Baptist Church, where both Martin Luther King, Jr. and his father was a priest. It was also from this church that Martin Luther King, Jr. was buried on April 9, 1968, which was five days after he had been killed.

In the national historical park, you can also get good insights into the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the civil rights movement at the site’s visitor center. And you can see King’s childhood home, located near Ebenezer Baptist Church at 501 Auburn Avenue. King was born here in 1929, and the family lived in the house until 1941. In the center of the area is Martin Luther King, Jr. buried with his wife and their grave can be visited next to the Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Fox Theatre, Atlanta, Georgia, USA

Fox Theatre Historic District

Fox Theatre is a beautiful building that opened in 1929 as one of Atlanta’s premier movie theaters. The building was originally intended as part of a temple, and that is the reason for the Moorish architecture. There is also an Egyptian style in the interior design of the theatre, whose auditorium was built for 4,665 spectators.

The old cinema building is at the center of the so-called Fox Theatre Historic District, which consists of four contemporary buildings that together form an historic area in Atlanta.

In addition to the Fox Theatre, the historic area consists of the Cox-Carlton Hotel from 1925, architect William Lee Stoddart’s Ponce de Leon Apartments from 1913, and the same Stoddart’s Georgian Terrace Hotel from 1911, which became famous in 1939 for holding the gala event at the premiere of the film Gone with the Wind. The premiere itself was shown at Loew’s Grand Theatre, located in downtown Atlanta.

At the entrance stands the 1869 Georgia Railroad Freight Depot, the oldest structure in Atlanta’s downtown. The building was the main warehouse building for The Georgia Railroad and Banking Company.

The railways in the area were the reason that the street level in the center was raised during new construction, and on that occasion the streets Pryor, Alabama, Ponder’s Alley and Kenny’s Alley were, so to speak, hidden under the new level of the city’s streets, and the same happened to the old house facades.

Athens

Athens is a cozy university town in Georgia. It offers a number of attractions such as the city’s beautiful town hall and the university’s State Botanical Garden of Georgia. With around 125,000 inhabitants, Athens is also an interesting contrast to the big city of Atlanta.

The town’s history began in the late 1700s, when a trading post was established on the banks of the Oconee River. Soon after, a university was established in the city, and since then it has left its mark on Athens, which is a distinctly cultural and educated city. The first students graduated in 1804, and at that time there were only a few buildings along the main street, which is now named Broad Street.

In addition to the city’s beautiful town hall and botanical garden, there are several things to see in Athens, whose central streets are pleasant for a stroll. Here, for example, you can go to the corner of College Avenue and E Hancock Avenue, where you can see a double-barrelled cannon from the American Civil War. You can also walk to the corner of S Finley Street and Dearing Street where ‘The Tree That Owns Itself’ stands. It is a tree that legally owns the land under and around it.

Macon was founded in 1823 along the banks of the Ocmulgee River, and the city’s expansion took place in accordance with James Webb’s town plan, whose center today forms what is known as the Macon Historic District. It is a neighborhood in the city where you can enjoy many houses from the 19th-century Victorian architecture. From that time you can also see the Johnston–Felton–Hay House, called the Palace of the South.

There are quite a few interesting things to see in Macon, both in the Macon Historic District and in other neighborhoods. For example, you can see Terminal Station from 1916, which was designed by the architect Alfred T. Fellheimer, who also designed Grand Central Terminal in New York. You can also go to Macon City Hall, which is a classicist building that was built in 1837. The city hall was temporarily Georgia’s Capitol during the American Civil War.

East of the Ocmulgee River you can see Fort Benjamin Hawkins, which was built as a military outpost in the years 1806-1810. In the same area is the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, where there are preserved remains of large earthworks created by the Native American culture of the 9th and 10th centuries.

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, Georgia, USA

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway is a vintage railroad that runs between Blue Ridge and McCaysville in northern Georgia. The train follows the Toccoa River and it runs through forests and over old bridges with wagons from the railroads of yesteryear. A trip on the track is therefore like going back in time to the golden age of railways in the USA.

The tracks in the area were laid from the city of Marietta, reaching the Blue Ridge area in 1886. The tracks were expanded over the following decades, and in 1905 a station was built at Blue Ridge. The last passenger train left the station in 1951, while freight trains ran until 1987. Three years later, work began on the establishment of the vintage railway, which opened in 1998.

Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA

Chattanooga

Chattanooga is a city in the state of Tennessee, located on the Tennessee River. It is a city that was strategically important in the American Civil War in the 1860s due to its status as a railroad hub. Since the war, Chattanooga also grew as a transportation center, and in this way it became an important industrial city. The city also became known from the song Chattanooga Choo Choo, which describes a train journey from New York to Terminal Station in Chattanooga.

There are several things to see and do in Chattanooga today, including many museums and activities for the whole family as well as several architectural sights. These include, for example, the attractions Tennessee Aquarium and the Creative Discovery Museum, and the James Building from 1907 and the Walnut Street Bridge from 1890 as architectural sights.

In addition to the Walnut Street Bridge, the Market Street Bridge, Olgiati Bridge and Veterans Memorial Bridge span the Tennessee River, providing access to beautiful walks along the Tennessee Riverwalk and in Coolidge Park. Also worth seeing is the Chattanooga Choo-Choo Hotel, which opened as Terminal Station in 1909 and hosts more activities today. You can also choose to see the city from above on a trip to Lookout Mountain just south of Chattanooga, where you get more than 400 meters above the surrounding terrain.

Providence Canyon State Park, Georgia, USA

Providence Canyon State Park

Providence Canyon State Park is a state park in Georgia with a beautiful landscape around the gorge Providence Canyon. The gorge is also called Georgia’s little Grand Canyon and offers beautiful scenery. However, unlike the Grand Canyon, Providence Canyon was created through human activity, more specifically due to agriculture in the 1800s. Today you can enjoy the fine landscape on several hiking trails in and around the gorge.

The state park’s 400-hectare area is on marine sediments that are clayey with small areas of sand. The contrasts and the gorge were created by partial erosion of the area, and the gorge was formed thereby. The unusual geological formations were created by erosion of the coastal plain after years of poor farming practices, and this has made it possible to walk for miles along sandy nature trails.

Overview of Dallas

Texas is the second largest state in the United States, and for many it is the epitome of the West with cattle farms, rodeos and large cowboy hats. At the same time, Texas is a state with lots of technology companies, modern buildings, fine museums and many sights, and you experience that right away when you come to Dallas.

Dallas gave name to the TV series with the Ewing family, and it still draws tourists to Southfork Ranch, located on the outskirts of town. Dallas was also the place where John F. Kennedy was shot and killed in 1963 as he drove in an open car through the city streets and along Elm Street at Dealey Plaza. The place is one of the sights of the city today.

If you want to get back to Dallas’ beginnings, Pioneer Park is a great place to start. Here you can see a fine sculpture group and a park that shows life in historic Texas. At the Old Red Museum you can take a closer look at the city’s history and development to this day. The city’s art museum is another good choice for a museum visit.

Dallas has grown along with Fort Worth, which offers its own sights, and there is also plenty to experience if you want to drive around the state of Texas or in the neighboring state of Oklahoma. A nice excursion can go to the state capital, Austin, where you can see the Texas State Capitol and Lyndon Johnson’s Presidential Library.

From here you can also enjoy the view of the city’s skyscrapers and visit popular places such as the World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium.
