City Map

City Introduction

The city of Denver is the capital and largest city in the state of Colorado. It is located on the South Platte River on the western border of the great prairie, steppe and grasslands called the Great Plains. On the horizon you can see the Rocky Mountains stretching all the way from north to south.

Denver is called the Mile High City because the city is located at an altitude of exactly one US mile. And it was at the confluence of the South Platte River and Cherry Creek that the city developed from its founding in 1858. Thereafter, the development went fast due to the gold finds in Pike’s Peak.

You can see buildings from early 19th century Denver around Larimer Square, and since then impressive high-rise buildings, churches, museums, etc. have been built. The modern business district with skyscrapers forms the profile of the city, while the Civic Center is home to the city and state government.

There are many things to see in the region around Denver. The possibilities in the Rocky Mountains attract many tourists both summer and winter with beautiful landscapes and ski areas. You can also see old gold mining towns and experience the atmosphere of the Wild West.

Top Attractions

Colorado State Capitol, Denver

Colorado State Capitol

Colorado’s Capitol is home to the state legislature and governor of Colorado. The beautiful building was constructed of light granite from Colorado and opened in 1894. The gilded dome is one of Denver’s landmarks, and on a tour of the Capitol you also get up in the dome, from which there is a fantastic view of the city and the Rocky Mountains towards west.

It was Elijah E. Myers who designed the building with inspiration from the United States Capitol in Washington. A few years after its opening, the dome was gilded as a symbol of the gold rush in Colorado, which lasted from 1858 to 1861. The building was built on slightly higher ground than the surrounding buildings, and the dimensions are impressive when you enter the 55 meter high dome hall.

An interesting detail can be seen on the 15th step of the Capitol’s west entrance. Here it says that you are exactly “One Mile Above Sea Level”, and Denver’s official altitude is determined from here. There are also markers on the 18th and 13th steps that have been added by recent measurements. In the Capitol, you can see portraits of US presidents and glass mosaics depicting people and events from Colorado’s history.

Larimer Square

Larimer Square is the name of a street section where 19th century buildings are preserved side by side. It was the city’s first main thoroughfare, and once housed a post office and a saloon in a few of the charming houses that today offer eateries and plenty of activities on the stretch that is unique in Denver.

Once the center of the city, Larimer Square began to decline in the 1900s as Denver’s downtown and activities moved away from the neighborhood. The restoration of the cozy area began in the mid-1960s, and today you can once again enjoy a good atmosphere surrounded by Victorian buildings with, for example, some of the city’s best restaurants.

16th Street Mall

16th Street Mall is Denver’s main thoroughfare and the city’s famous pedestrian street. Here you can see modern high-rises and office buildings from the city’s history, and there are also fountains, cafes and shops on the long pedestrian street, which was laid out in 1982. The pavement was since interestingly paved with patterns taken from the Texas rattlesnake.

The 16th Street Mall is approximately two kilometers long, and the street stretches from the area of Union Station in the north to Broadway in the south. In the past, there was heavy traffic with many buses in the street, but today it is the MallRide bus line that runs along the street. That line was created as a service to the many shops and restaurants located here.

Denver Art Museum

Denver Art Museum

Denver Art Museum is one of the finest art museums in the central United States. Here you can enjoy large and varied collections with many distinguished works from the Native American cultures of North America in the collection. You can also see African and Asian art, and there is also a collection of European works.

The history of the museum dates back to the Denver Artist’s Club, founded in 1893. The first exhibitions were established in 1919, and the site was named the Denver Art Museum in 1923. In 1971, an expansion of the then museum opened in the form of the Italian modernist Gio Pontis North Building, which stands as a modern version of a medieval castle with over a million glass tiles on the facade.

Later, the museum was expanded with the Hamilton Building, which is also an interesting experience in itself. The Hamilton Building was designed by Daniel Libeskind and stands as the museum’s architectural landmark.

Civic Center

Civic Center is Denver’s institutional center and the site of many of the city’s major public buildings. Civic Center Park is located as a green area in the center of the area, and here you can see Colorado’s Capitol, Denver’s city hall, several museums and, in general, a beautiful ensemble characterized by neoclassical buildings.

The Civic Center was conceived by Mayor Robert W. Speer, who at the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 had seen examples of the so-called City Beautiful movement, which was supposed to create beautification and grandeur in American cities. However, it took a few years and several elections before Civic Center Park could open in 1919.

The buildings around Civic Center Park vary considerably in style, and The City and County Building to the west was completed in neoclassical architecture in 1932. To the south, you can see the Denver Art Museum and the Denver Central Library. The park is today the venue for many of the city’s major outdoor cultural events.

City and County Building

The City and County Building is Denver’s City Hall and is where the Mayor has his office and the City Council also has their meeting room in the building. The beautiful building was completed in 1932 and is located at the west end of Denver’s Civic Center. During the holidays, the town hall is illuminated in the most beautiful way and stands as one of the most interesting buildings around Civic Center Park.

The City and County Building was erected across from the Colorado State Capitol, and the height was intentionally made lower than the Capitol so that there would still be a view of the Rocky Mountains from here. City Hall was designed in Greek Neoclassicism and as the most impressive construction in Mayor Robert Speer’s W. City Beautiful initiative to beautify Denver’s administrative center.

The city’s government goes back to 1860, when a group of citizens met in the saloon Libeus Barney’s Apollo Hall on what was then Larimer Street. They created The People’s Government of the City of Denver. The first town hall was built in 1883 and it also served as a fire station, jail and police station. The old town hall was demolished in 1937.

It was the Denver Pacific Railway that opened a station in 1868. At the time, the station connected the city with the transcontinental railroad in Cheyenne, Wyoming. After that, development went quickly with the construction of new tracks from Denver, and in 1875 there were four different railway yards in the city, belonging respectively to the Union Pacific, Denver & Rio Grande, Colorado Central and Denver, South Park & Pacific.

In 1880, the Union Pacific Railroad proposed to the other companies the construction of a unified Union Station that would provide a central railroad hub in the city. Union Station opened in May 1881, and one of the hallmarks of this station was a clock tower with four dials. The tower was built to a height of 99 meters, making it the tallest building in the United States between Mississippi and California when it was completed in 1911. It was architect Frederick Sterner who designed the department store, including the tower, which houses a viewing platform on the 20th floor.

Confluence Park, Denver

Confluence Park

Confluence Park is a city park located at the confluence of the Cherry Creek and South Platte Rivers. It was in this very place that William Greeneberry Russell started looking for gold in May 1858. Russell did not find gold here, but nearby discoveries led to the establishment of a camp, which over the years developed into Denver.

Today, Confluence Park is a popular recreational area, with trails for walking, jogging and cycling along the rivers. It is also from here that you can take a ride on the Denver Trolley, an old-stock streetcar line that opened in 1989. The line runs along the South Platte River to the southwest, and you ride an open-top replica of a 1903 Brill streetcar.

Equitable Building

The Equitable Building is an office building that was opened in 1892 and, at 45 meters tall, was Denver’s tallest building. It had that status until 1911, when the Daniels & Fisher Tower took the record height with 99 metres. The building was designed by Andrews, Jaques & Rantoul and erected during Denver’s construction boom in the 1890s.

The grand structure is a beautiful example of Italian Neo-Renaissance architecture of the time, with its numerous sets of arched windows and the ornate carved granite that defines the appearance of the Equitable Building. By the way, the building was also known for the interior with the use of many technological advances such as water, heat and the operation of the elevators.

Day Trips

Black Hawk, Colorado USA

Central City & Black Hawk

Central City and Black Hawk are two cities located next to each other. They are located in the Rocky Mountains and were founded in the time of the gold discoveries in Pike’s Peak. The place was then known as The Richest Square Mile on Earth. John H. Gregory found gold here in 1859, and already the following year several thousand lived in the town. The towns grew and thereby became the most populous in what was then the Colorado Territory.

Today you can experience a nice gold digger atmosphere in the streets and many modern casinos that attract tourists. The old buildings in Central City and Black Hawk stand beautifully preserved as witnesses of the gold rush days and the history and architecture of the rapidly expanding mining communities of the time that characterized several parts of the United States.

Central City and Black Hawk were constructed in extension of each other with Black Hawk being the easternmost of the cities. Here you can see the old part along Main Street and Gregory Street, and one of the buildings worth seeing is The Gilpin Hotel from 1869. If you continue along Gregory Street to the west, you come to the center of Central City, whose old part around Main Street is quite a bit larger than the Black Hawk.

You can also drive further west from Central City along Nevadaville Road. Here, after a short distance, you come to the ghost town of Nevadaville, which also originated as a gold mining town, then with the name Navada City. In 1880, More than 1,000 people lived in Nevadaville, which had been established in 1859. Today, sporadic remains and the surviving Masonic building from 1861 can be seen.

Golden

Golden was the capital of Colorado from 1862-1867 after it was established as a gold mining town in 1859. The atmosphere from the Wild West and the gold rush era still prevails, and there are many things to see here such as the Golden History Center, the Astor House Hotel from 1867 and the Colorado Railroad Museum.

Golden was originally called Golden City, and the name came from the gold prospector Thomas L. Golden, who was one of the first to arrive to the area in 1858, when the Colorado gold rush broke started. The city developed with its good location between the Rocky Mountains to the west and cities and settlements to the east. However, Denver grew faster than Golden, and Denver won the battle to become a railroad hub, so it was natural that the capital was moved there from Golden in 1867.

However, there was still a lot of activity in Golden, which was the hub for traffic to the mining towns in the Rocky Mountains. There were also educational institutions, an opera, churches and some industry in the town, which however remained relatively small until the early 1900s. Until 1930, less than 2,500 people lived in the city, which had also established streetcar lines to Denver.

Today you can take some pleasant walks in Golden’s old center. Colorado Railroad Museum is worth as visit too, it takes visitors back to the development of communities in the latter half of the 1800s. Golden is also known for its many breweries, whose products can be enjoyed in the city. From Golden, you can drive to Lookout Mountain to the west, where you can visit the Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave.

Georgetown Loop Railroad, Colorado USA

Georgetown-Silver Plume Historic District

Georgetown is a mountain town that, like many others in the area, was established after the gold discoveries in Pike’s Peak in 1858. However, it was silver and not gold that mainly developed this particular town. Today, Georgetown is a cozy and beautiful place with the town of Silver Plume as almost an extension. The two cities, together with a railroad, form the Georgetown-Silver Plume Historic District.

It was George and David Griffiths who found gold on the site in 1859, but the find was of a smaller size compared to the large silver finds that were made five years later. The silver kicked off a boom in the place, which was named after George Griffiths. Georgetown became the center for several thousand miners in the area’s mountains, and satellite towns such as Silver Plume arose in the quest for silver. Mining activities continued until the 1890s.

Today you can visit Georgetown and see many of the city’s preserved houses for the 19th century mining town, which was then called The Silver Queen of Colorado. Sixth Street is the main street from the 19th century, where the charming houses and historic places such as the Hotel de Paris and the town hall lie side by side with the Rocky Mountains as a backdrop at both ends.

A few kilometers west of Georgetown is the somewhat smaller Silver Plume, which was established as a camp for the task of finding silver in the mountains. There is also a nice atmosphere here, where you can experience some of the historic camp and mining atmosphere on a walk along Main Street.

Adding to the experience in the area is the major attraction, the Georgetown Loop Railroad. It is a narrow-gauge railway that was opened between Georgetown and Silver Plume as a major engineering feature in the 1880s. There is only 3.2 kilometers between the cities, but due to a 6% gradient, the track was built with a length of 7.2 kilometers to reduce the gradient to 3%. The name Georgetown Loop Railroad comes from the fact that the tracks had to be built with several horseshoe turns and a viaduct where the track crosses itself with a height difference of 30 meters.

The railway between Georgetown and Silver Plume was completed in 1884, and it was not least used to transport silver ore from the mines around Silver Plume. The line was intended to be built further west to Keystone and Leadville, but the project was not realized. The Colorado and Southern Railway took over the tracks in 1893, and they operated the line with freight and passengers until 1938. After that, the track was removed, but in the 1980s, a 4.8-kilometer stretch was rebuilt between Devils Gate at Georgetown and Silver Plume. And it can be driven on with old equipment like a tourist train today.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park is a national park located northwest of Denver in the Front Range, which is part of the Rocky Mountains. The park is one of the most visited of the USA’s many national parks, and there are many good reasons for that. Nature is magnificent with mountains, mountain lakes, forests and beautiful panoramas almost everywhere. There are several visitor centers at the park entrances and they are worth a visit to learn more about the park and its nature and wildlife.

The park has a size of just over 1,000 km2, and it is located geographically on both sides of the high watershed that divides the east-facing and west-facing river systems in the United States. In the northwestern part of the park, the Colorado River has its source, and from here the river flows through the Grand Canyon, among other places, before it empties into the Gulf of California.

Rocky Mountain National Park was established in 1915, when President Woodrow Wilson formally signed the document establishing the park. In the 1930s, the large area was made accessible with the construction of the 77 kilometer long road, Trail Ridge Road, which runs through the national park from the town of Estes Park in the east to Grand Lake in the west. Trail Ridge Road provides access to beautiful views and takes drivers up to an elevation of 3,713 meters.

You can drive along Trail Ridge Road to visit the park, but there are also other roads, such as Bear Lake Road, which lead to the beautiful area around Bear Lake. Along the way, you can visit five visitor centers, all of which tell the story of national park and its nature and climate zones. It is the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center closest to Estes Park, Moraine Park Discovery Center, Fall River Visitor Center, Alpine Visitor Center and Kawuneeche Visitor Center at Grand Lake.

Mount Blue Sky

Mount Blue Sky is a good excursion destination if you want to go high up in the mountains west of Denver. The top of Mount Blue Sky is at 4,350 meters, and by taking the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway you get almost to the top with lots of beautiful scenery and views along the way, such as the one over Echo Lake.

The Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway is a paved road that reaches an elevation of 4,310 meters above sea level, making it the highest in North America. From the end of the road you can walk up to the top of the mountain. Please note that the road is closed in winter.

Mount Blue Sky is the highest point in a mountain massif that also includes a number of other peaks with a height of over 4,000 metres. In this way, a trip to the top provides an opportunity to really feel at the top and at the same time enjoy an incomparable view of the landscape. Cheyenne, Wyoming, USA

Cheyenne

Cheyenne is the capital and largest city of the US state of Wyoming. The town’s history began on July 4, 1867, when Grenville M. Dodge of the Union Pacific Railroad announced the site of the company’s new town in connection with the construction of the Crow Creek Railroad. The next day, Crow Creek Crossing was founded, and the inhabitants later named the town after the Cheyenne tribe.

The first train arrived to town in November 1867, and the U.S. Army founded a fort in the area the same year. The following year, Wyoming Territory was established from a part of the Territory of Dakota, and Cheyenne was chosen as the capital.

In 1912, The Denver Terminal Railway Company was founded by the railroad companies of the time, and they demolished part of the station and replaced the center section with the current beaux-arts one.
