City Map

City Introduction

Lake Havasu City is a relatively new city, having been established as a recreational military camp during World War II. At the time, the place was called Site Six, and it was located right by Lake Havasu, which was artificially created with the construction of the Parker Dam in the mid-1930s. The lake forms part of the course of the Colorado River, and it is located on the border of Arizona and California.

In 1958, businessman Robert McCulloch purchased 13 square kilometers of land in the area, and he supplemented the purchase with another 53 square kilometers before Lake Havasu City was incorporated on September 30, 1963. It received formal city status in 1978, and since then the city has become one of the most visited in Arizona.

At the central part of Lake Havasu City, you can walk or drive to the island of Pittsburgh Point, formerly a peninsula. Today, the island is separated from the rest of Arizona along the Bridgewater Canal, and the connection to the island is the city’s biggest attraction. Here you can see the London Bridge, which Robert McCulloch bought from the city council in the English capital in 1968, when it had to be replaced. The American gave 2.5 million dollars for the bridge, which was then carefully disassembled and shipped to the United States, where it was reassembled and opened in 1971.

The entire area around the London Bridge is worth seeing, and here you can visit the Lake Havasu City Visitor Center and take a walk along the canal and enjoy the view of the bridge. There are also shops and eateries in the area, where you can take a short ferry ride across the Colorado River as well. The ferry sails from the dock just north of London Bridge, and after a short sail you arrive at the urban area of Havasu Lake on the lake’s western shore in California. Here is the Havasu Landing Resort & Casino, which is run by the Chemehuevi Indian tribe.

When you are in Lake Havasu City and cross the London Bridge, you will come to Pittsburgh Point. You can drive around the island or take a hike, and in several places, there is a view of Lake Havasu and California, which is only a few hundred meters from Arizona. There are lovely beaches along the Bridgewater Channel if you want to enjoy the city’s usually good weather.

If you want to know more about the history of the city and the region, you can take a trip to the Lake Havasu Museum of History, which depicts different periods and aspects through history. You will find information about the Indian tribes and their cultures, mining, trade, the construction of Parker Dam and, of course, the time with Robert McCulloch and his purchase of London Bridge.

Lake Havasu City has several natural attractions to enjoy. One of them is the many birds that are around Lake Havasu. You can go to Mesquite Bay north of the city to look over the water. It is also possible to enjoy many starry evenings in the desert because Robert McCulloch designed Lake Havasu City without streetlights in the residential areas. The east end of Bison Boulevard, the Site Six Parking Lot at Pittsburgh Point, SARA Park and Yonder Park are some of the good places to see the stars.
