City Map

City Introduction

Palm Springs is one of several cities located in the Californian desert in the Coachella Valley east of Los Angeles. The city is known for its mild and warm climate, many activities and proximity to several beautiful places in nature.

Palm Springs became particularly well-known in the first half of the 20th century, when the city developed into a popular holiday destination. Mount San Jacinto to the west of the city ensured and still ensures visitors comfortable temperatures even in winter, which can be chilly on the Pacific Ocean. More and more hotels were built, and luxury attracted movie stars and other celebrities.

Since then, the city’s airport has been expanded, and in Palm Springs and neighboring cities in the Coachella Valley, golf courses and other recreational activities have been built. You can also look at classy architecture in the city, which is particularly known for the so-called desert modern, which characterizes the style from the 1950s and 1960s, which is seen in many places in Palm Springs.

An example of desert modern is the city’s visitor center, the Palm Springs Visitor Center at 2901 North Palm Canyon Drive, which was built as the Tramway Gas Station in 1965. You can also drive through central Palm Springs and see buildings in the style with their characteristic roof constructions and windows that provide shade and keep the hot sun from heating up the houses too much.

Locals and visitors also benefit from the proximity to the mountains and the surrounding natural areas. You can visit Joshua Tree National Park to the north, and to the west is Mount San Jacinto. You can easily get to the top of the 3,302-meter-high mountain by taking the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which takes guests up to 2,596 meters in just over 12 minutes.

The cable car rotates on the way up, so everyone gets nice panoramic views towards the top station. From the top you can in clear weather see hundreds of kilometers away to the mountains north of Las Vegas in Nevada, and of course there is an unforgettable view of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. To the south you can see the Salton Sea, which is 72 meters below sea level.

Lake Havasu City, USA

Lake Havasu City

Lake Havasu City is a relatively new city, having been established as a recreational military camp during World War II. At the time, the place was called Site Six, and it was located right by Lake Havasu, which was artificially created with the construction of the Parker Dam in the mid-1930s. The lake forms part of the course of the Colorado River, and it is located on the border of Arizona and California.

In 1958, businessman Robert McCulloch purchased 13 square kilometers of land in the area, and he supplemented the purchase with another 53 square kilometers before Lake Havasu City was incorporated on September 30, 1963. It received formal city status in 1978, and since then the city has become one of the most visited in Arizona.
